From Carol
A little over 3
years ago my
family doctor retired. She had a nice young woman doctor
ready to
take over the practice. I found Dr. Wordle when my
previous doctor
went into palliative care medicine. Sue told me about a
new practice
being set up a couple blocks from my place because they
opened an
account at the bank she worked at back in the 80s. I
walked over
and even though they weren’t accepting patients yet they
made an
exception and took all my information. Since my doctor
was younger
than me I expected to have her forever and it never
occurred to me
she would retire before I died. Then at my last
optometrist
appointment in the fall my optometrist, whom I also have
had since
the 80s, told me he was retiring at Christmas. With Jim
I felt like
we had a friendship besides the professional
relationship. He was
heartbroken when my Mom died (also his patient), I knew
about what
his children were up to through the different stages of
their lives
and he knew all about my family. At least I got to hug
him goodbye.
Then I broke a
piece of tooth
a couple of weeks ago and called my dentist’s office. It
was a
strange voice on the phone but I made my appointment. I
was
blindsided to find out my dentist and hygienist retired
shortly after
my last appointment in the fall. My hygienist was having
back
problems and said she was considering retiring if it
didn’t improve
but she was going for physical therapy. I have also been
with them
for more than 30 years and knew about difficult
pregnancies, kids
starting school, starting university, starting their own
families.
Both Kathy and Debbie went through painful divorces.
They knew all
about my grandkids and would ask me how Viv is handling
her diabetes.
Kathy decided to sell her business and retire herself
when Debbie
couldn’t work anymore rather than break in a new
hygienist after so
many years. She just didn’t expect her practice to sell
so quickly.
All of these people are younger then I am, and again, I
expected to
have them forever. The dentist who fixed my tooth seems
very
competent but I can’t imagine him being someone I will
get to know.
Now today Al went to see his doctor, the same office as
mine, and
David told him he is also retiring, despite Al telling
him he can’t
until after Al dies. By the way it seems Al is suffering
from
bursitis and anti-inflammatory pills should fix him up.
I gather they
spent much of the appointment talking about hockey and
the fact David
is expecting his 6th grandchild. So Al also has a more
than just
patient doctor relationship and will really miss his
doctor.
It just never
occurred to me
that our younger health professionals would retire in my
lifetime but
since we are older so are they. We just are not ready
for all this
change.

So sorry I didn't
send any
stories in during Christmas. I had two weeks off
work and the time
just flew
by. Now we are into serious winter. The snow just
wouldn't stop
yesterday and all night. We woke up to a winter
wonderland. Absolutely everything is covered by at least
3 feet. It was major
work to uncover our vehicles. If the sun would come out
it would be
amazing. Luckily we have Zane and Dave to clear the
driveways and
make it all passable. Now it will be icy if the temps
come up.
The chickens are
laying so
good that I am finding more homes to sell the eggs. I
have customers for hair and eggs these days. I hope you
all had a good
Christmas and a Happy New Year.

From Gary
Hi folks. Another
week rushed
by. Nothing to write about except the weather. We’re in
the midst
of January thaw. Calling for mild temperature , winds
and rain. Snow
going quickly. Max is going to replace our car breaks on
Saturday.
Hopefully it will go smoothly. Take care and stay safe
everyone.

From Doug
This is all I’ve
got this
week because I don’t think there is much point in going
on too much
about how it doesn’t seem to ever stop raining here.
Carol had sent me a
nice
birthday card a while back and in it she said that under
better times
Sue would have baked me a pie for my B-day. Well, I’m
not as
helpless as I look, I made my own pie. The pastry is
also home made,
but not by me although I may get around to doing that at
some point.
The last time Sherry was our there she had made up a
batch of pie
pastry and made balls of the stuff just the right size
to be rolled
out into pie shells. The balls were frozen for good
keeping. I still
have 2 frozen pastry balls left so another pie or so is
in my future.
Here is the pic of the raisin pie I made and yes, it
tasted quite
nice good.
