Hi Squids: (This was supposed be in last week's Squid but it bounced back and I didn't notice.) Even though the world is exploding, almost nothing is happening here in New Brunswick. The issue that has bubbled up through ‘nothing’ is the river breakup.I predicted the breakup about April 1st but Sonja said that last year on St. Patrick’s Day the breakup occurred.

Well blow me down! March 17th we woke up to this. Although you can’t see them, there are giant ice chunks, some standing on edge and rising 10’ in the air. Then the deep freeze set in and all was still for about a week. That’s a good thing because it gives a chance for all the streams and rivers to drain down to a safe level before the next melt. The next melt was yesterday and today, and so a channel has cleared out in the deeper part of the river allowing the flood level to recede. Here is what the river looks like today.

Well that’s all folks! Hold the press! Granddaughter Gabi joined the 4-H club locally and made a presentation about our livestock. At 7 years old and probably the youngest presenter, she took 1st prize in her group. Then she presented at a regional meeting and got 2nd prize. Now if we want to talk to her we have to make an appointment.

The weeks sure go by fast and it's time to write in to the Squamidian.

Yesterday there was an ice storm and walking anywhere was treacherous. I had some salt to spread and that was hardly enough. Wasn't sure if I could make it to the chicken coop without slipping. They are used to me showing up with fresh water and feed. Well I made it carefully so all are happy.

That made me think I have tracks for my boots so that got me cleaning out the hall closet. I haven't used them in years so I was super happy to find them. What a difference they made.

Warren is arriving from B.C. this morning. Thursday..Ward is picking him up. The ice is gone so driving should be okay thank goodness. It will be great to have Warren around he likes to get involved in what ever projects we are into at the time. Also he helps Ward out quite a bit. He brings his guitar so there wil be lots of singing too.

Hi everyone. Welcome to April. The only April Fools joke I tried to pull off was telling Evy we had a foot of snow. She wasn’t awake enough to actually comprehend, even when she looked outside. She didn’t even flinch. Just thought the snow melted away in a few minutes. Planted peas in the garden and will plant lettuce this weekend if it stops raining. 17• today and windy, cold and wet for Saturday and Sunday. Easter egg hunt will be inside Saturday afternoon. I’m to the point where if I hide them in the morning I will have forgotten by the afternoon 😂. A mosquito buzzed my ear on our morning walk but left before I could get it. Enjoy your Easter weekend. Take care and stay safe.

Today is Good Friday and we continue our egg colouring tradition at the Homestead. Back in 1977 my parents had put the wood stove in the basement and created a wood pile in the side yard. That year my girls and I joined the parents to colour the eggs. Beth and Jackie didn’t want to pour the colour down the sink so Dad suggested we throw it onto the wood. The tradition grew and evolved into the egg colouring, wood chopping, chocolate hunting and ceremony of the wood pile we have every Good Friday. The hunting of our Easter baskets and/or chocolate bunnies used to be held on Easter Sunday but with everyone with their own families to spend Easter with the chocolate hunting became part of our Good Friday. When I was young Mom took a picture of us holding our baskets and wearing our best clothes every Easter. Back then developing pictures was expensive and Mom’s old camera really needed the outside lighting. I am guessing that the whole hiding of Easter goodies came from Dad’s side of the family. Wayne was that part of your childhood? Anyway Al and I wish all of you a very happy Easter.

In my world these days its a good thing when there is not much to talk about because that means not much has happened or is happening and thats a good thing. So its the little things that give me something to share and as you’ve probably figured out, one of those little things is trying to make pie. Pie meant a lot to us as kids and to us as adults as well because our mother was a pie expert. (If anyone has her pie dough recipe I’d love to have a copy). She’d make half a dozen pies at at time, all different kinds. So, at events out at the homestead there would be so many kinds to choose from that it would be an impossible choice to make and therefore I never made the choice. I’d simply have a very small piece of each. I don’t make multiple pies at the same time. I’m quite pleased with myself for making just one at a time.

This time its an apple pie, and in full disclosure, I did not make the filling. I made the pastry and took Rosemary’s advice and used ‘store-bought’ filling. At time of assembly I added half a cup of raisins because no self respecting apple pie would be seen in public without raisins. And I must say, it turned out quite nice. So, using store-bought canned filling is an ok way to do it when the alternative would be not doing it at all. One thing though, it wasn’t until AFTER I’d made and sampled my apple pie that Rosemary informed me that she makes hers and includes a crumble top. Well, I’m new at this and had never considered such a thing. So, perhaps next time I do apple I’ll try her crumble recipe and see how that works. Always something new to try or add.

Jane and I have another song recorded. Like all the others, its been a work in progress as it can be hard to find the necessary uninterrupted time needed to do these things. This one is an old ‘The Band’ song called ‘The Weight’. Its a very fun song to do, perhaps one of our favorites – especially the last line in the choruses. It also tells kind of a silly story and I tend to like songs that tell a story. So, here’s the link, give it a listen. Its also on our web page if you’re keeping track.
