One morning we
rolled in to
the gondola on the Harley only to find there were 2
out-of-province
bikes parked in ‘MY’ private parkings spot. I park on
the
sidewalk beside the mobility parking spots and just
outside the main
office building. No problem, there was still a bit of
room there. The
bikes were from Alberta and it was easy to spot the
riders as bikers
on a road trip do tend to stand out. It was a him and
her situation
where each has their own machine. I struck up a
conversation with
them as we waited in the lift line, it being still a few
minutes
until the lifts open. We boarded our cabin and let them
ride up in a
cabin to themselves. Most people prefer, if possible, to
have a cabin
to themselves. As per usual, once at the top I got Sue
settled into
our ‘personal private seating’ and then headed for the
coffee bar
to get our daily morning coffee.
As I was paying for
our coffee
at the till, I noticed the 2 riders at the coffee bar.
Something I
like to do but not many others are aware can be done is
I keep a
monetary value stored on my gondola pass. When pass
holders purchase
anything there, they can get a 20% discount by having
their pass
scanned. You can also use that stored value to pay for
your purchase,
sort of like a debit card. I find it convenient to do
that. Just for
the fun of it, I told the girl at the till, Rachel, to
hang onto my
pass for a few minutes and when the bikers came through,
just take
whatever they have purchased off of my pass. She thought
that was a
pretty cool thing for someone to do for total strangers.
I left and
went over and sat down with Sue at the table in our
little corner.
I could hear
surprise in their
voices when they tried to pay for their purchases, which
was full
breakfasts. Rachel pointed me out to them and they came
over to thank
us and we invited them to partake in our comfy seating
setting.
Rachel brought my pass over and handed it back to me.
The riders
couldn’t believe someone would do that. I explained that
its a fun
thing to do once in a while, I often offer to get
strangers the 20%
discount and face it, all bikers are friends as far as
I’m
concerned. We had a great chat with them, I gave them
advice
regarding safely riding over the Duffy, and then we got
up and headed
for home.
A few days later I
popped in
to the customer service office just to say hi. I do that
whenever
they are not busy because, why not. As we were chatting,
Karren told
me that there was something there for me and pulled an
envelope out
from behind the counter. It contained a thank you note
and a $20 gift
card. It was from the 2 riders. It was not necessary but
certainly
nice of them. They signed it ‘your biker friends’. Cool.

And of course we
just endured
the mid summer long weekend, known as the BC Day weekend
around here.
You all know how I HATE long weekends and the traffic
they produce.
This one is the worst because it includes the Squamish
Loggers Sports
annual event right here in town. The highway becomes
impossible,
around town becomes impossible and so on. So, needless
to say, we
went no where, we didn’t even do our usual Sunday
morning Horseshoe
Bay coffee run. We just hid at home, all weekend long
and listened to
the sirens down on the highway and laughed to the
highway web cam
views showing endless parking lots.
