The St of Georgia Circle Route

We did a two-day drive around the northern section of the Straight of Georgia as a get-away to celebrate our 32 anniversary. We started out from Horseshoe Bay. These are the docks and boats that were wrecked and replaced a short time ago when a BC ferry lost steering control.

The Bowen Island ferry coming in.

Leaving Horseshoe Bay. Vancouver Island in the far distance.

As we round the point, English Bay and the skyline of Vancouver come into view.

As we look back and up Howe Sound we can see Mt Garibaldi, the Mamquam ice fields and Brohm Ridge, all perhaps about 70 miles or more away.

After landing at Departure Bay in Nanaimo, we drove north up Vancouver Island. We kept to the old Island Highway rather than the new 4-lane inland highway. This shot was taken at Qualicum Beech, looking north at Denman and Hornby Islands.

There is a motel we stay at when in Courtenay. A short walk from the motel takes us to the small air-park. There is a walkway that takes you all the way around the airport and into the estuary. Along the walkway are clumps of blackberries. These ones are just starting to ripen.
