Mulligan Revisited!

Last time we were up into Roy Bowl atop Mt. Mulligan it was May 14/05. We decided to give it a try again as we had just made it to the edge of the high alpine valley where we were turned back by snow.

The trail up is very rough and washed out with steep sections that almost defeat the bikes. As well, long stretches are overgrown to the point where you can't see past your front wheel and the branches try their best to sweep you off the bike seat.

The entrance into the Bowl is through an area that had been logged off years ago. The view out is to the west.

There's Ryan with Alfa and the Tantalus Range behind him.

Hidden on top of Mt. Mulligan is a pristeen valley with an inviting meadow.

The view from this spot is straight up the Squamish River Valley, our usual playground.

Over to the south-west are the coastal mountains on the far side of Howe Sound and the top of the Chief's third peak in the not so far distance.

Here is where my mis-adventures started while on the climb up. That cross ditch is deep and washed out with some large rocks in the bottom. You drop straight down into it and then have to climb up the loose far side.

Things didn't work out so good. My front wheel caught a rock wrong and the bike shot off to the left and plowed into the dirt face of the bank. The bike rolled up-side-down and I did an 'ass over teakettle' maneuver over the bars and into the bushes. Good thing, if I'd stayed on the bike I'd have been under it and on those rocks.

While I agreed to re-enact my spill, I declined laying the bike back up-side-down in the ditch.

The bikes waited patiently for us to finish our photo-shoot on the ride back down.

Warren sent me a few pics that he took. Click on to the next page to see them.
