Garibaldi Ice Cap

Aug. 2008

This picture was taken on Aug. 4/08. Its the same shot that I've posted covering the dirt bike ride we did up onto Brohm Ridge that day. It shows the ice-sheet / glacier that is cradled between the twin peaks of Mt Garibaldi. That sheet is very thick, as indicated by the sheer face of the ice cliff in the center of the picture. Our view angle from up on the Ridge is from the west, looking east.

On Aug. 14 that ice face collapsed, with the debris forming an arm reaching down the slope. We were working down in the Industrial Park and in the early morning the face was still intack. Sometime about mid morning we looked up and saw the results of the collaps. Our view angle from the valley bottom is from the south, looking east of north. Our photographic methed for this shot was makeshift, but it worked. I had my spotter scope in the truck, and one of the guys at work had his camera. The scope is optomized for looking at birds and other wildlife, not distant mountain scenery. We pointed it at the glacier and then held the camera up to the eye piece. It worked, giving and interesting circle shape for the target while the rest of the picture file is blocked and therefore black.
