Feb. 26/05
Warm sunny Saturday afternoon. Four of use took a trip up the
Upper Squamish River Valley to do some dirt biking up the logging
roads. We spent most of our time up Branch 100.
We are on the North, sunlit side of the valley. That is the
Squamish River below in the valley bottom.
Same view, slightly different angle. The high valley on the left
through the trees is the Ashlu.
Looking more westerly up the valley. Some of the road we were
following can be seen.
Again looking more westerly. The road we are on is visible, cut
into the side of the slope.
Here we can look across the valley again, up into the Ashlu. Old
cut blocks are visible on the mountain sides.
Looking east, just more road heading up the mountain. Visible is
some old clearcut areas. Very ugly scars.
We stopped at a staging place to cool off. The sun was so warm
hitting the south facing slopes that we were down right hot.
Ironically, we turned back at this point due to icy riding
conditions in the shaded spots. The 4 of use included Warren, his
brother's son Ben, his friend Gill and myself.
At this point we are down in the valley, on a bridge crossing the
Ashlu River just before it empties into the Squamish. We are in
deep shade with the sun seen shining up the canyon. Spanish moss
is hanging on some of the trees.
The deciduous forest and open floor along the river. All these
trees are covered with moss. Once the leaves are open this will
be a very dark place.
An up-close look at the mossy maple.
On April 30/05 we headed
back up the Branch 100 roads. Only took a couple of shots as
weather was closing in. They can be seen HERE.
